There are approximately 1800 people studying and working in the Department from around the world, with over 400 academic, research and support staff, 500 graduate students, 760 undergraduates and Part II students, and over 100 visitors. Our research supports key areas such as the environment, sustainable energy, food and water, medicine and medical breakthroughs and collaboration is extensive both internally and externally, within academia, industry and elsewhere.
We are currently largest Chemistry Departments in the UK and one of the largest Departments in the University of Oxford. We host a range of office and laboratory environments, chemicals, lasers, radiation, biological agents etc. with a strong focus on health and safety which this is positively recognised in feedback from staff and students alike. There are extensive dedicated chemistry facilities including NMR, Mass Spectrometry, Crystallography and Surface Analysis to name but a few to support the research being undertaken.
There is a diverse mix of historical and modern buildings within the Chemistry group, details of which can be found at http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/research.html. New purpose built Undergraduate Practical Teaching Laboratories will be introduced in October 2018. The buildings are managed by the Facilities Teams who provide support to users and ensure the buildings are at peak functionality at all times.
All buildings offer rest areas, vending machines and tea and coffee making facilities for employees and students. The Chemistry Research Laboratory hosts a restaurant offering hot and cold food and snacks which is open during the day, and provides space for events in the atrium.
In addition to the onsite facilities, the University Club is 2 minutes’ walk away and offers a range of food and beverages throughout the day and evening, and offers participation in a range of sporting activities. The University Parks are also 2 minutes’ walk from the Department.
